It was an Old World beatdown on day 2 at Solheim Cup 2013. After a positive morning foursome showing that saw them earned 2.5 points and close the deficit to 1 point (6.5 to 5.5), Team USA was swept in afternoon fourball 4 to 0 to fall behind Team Europe 10.5 to 5.5. In order for the Americans to win back the Cup, they must win 9 of a possible 12 points in Sunday’s singles matches. Should the Europeans manage to merely earn 3.5 points, they will successfully defend the Cup for the first time, not to mention win their first Solheim Cup on American soil. Well, I’m going to say it…and maybe this is a feeling of patriotic hope more than reality, but you have to have hope and belief to create reality sometimes…it’s not over. Is Europe firmly in command? Yes. Would I be surprised if they close out the my fellow Americans, possibly early, on Sunday? Not at all. With that said, Team USA must, and should, believe in themselves. They have dug a deep hole and will need a monumental comeback for the ages to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. It might be improbable, but it isn’t impossible. One hole at a time. One match at a time.

There were plenty of shining stars on Saturday for the European side, so I won’t go match by match. I will say that Caroline Hedwall continues to demonstrate her talent in Solheim play. In the morning she teamed with Anna Nordqvist to take down Morgan Pressel and Jessica Korda 2 & 1. It was Nordqvist who would have the shot of the day, ending the match on 17 with a hole in one. Hedwall came back in the afternoon to form Team Caroline with Caroline Masson, again defeating Korda, who this time was paired with Michelle Wie. Jessica was a bit despondent after the afternoon match. She should look to Carlota Ciganda, who struggled on Friday but came back to shine for Europe on Saturday, teaming up with Azahara Munoz to defeat Angela Stanford and Gerina Piller 1-up in afternoon fourball. Just as Ciganda bounced back, so can Jessica Korda on Sunday. I expect that she will.

There was brilliant play from Team USA on Saturday, particularly in the morning matches but even in the afternoon ones as well. Things just didn’t break their way. Brittany Lang, Michelle Wie, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and others played well. It was just just an avalanche in the second matches. On Sunday, I will believe until I have a reason not to believe. In other words, I will not waver unless my fellow Americans finally fall. Otherwise, I keep the faith. And if I can do so watching the team, the players should as well. They should just go out and play. No need to be tense or try to overdo anything. One shot at a time. One hole at a time. U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A! 🙂
