Mika Miyazato
It seems whether it’s in the United States or Japan, a national Women’s Open is going to test both the skills and wills of the best female golfers in the world. There will be no 20-under runaway scores. Even elite players need patience. They are forced to embrace the beauty of scoring par on a hole, maybe also the value of a well earned bogey. The 2013 Japan Women’s Open, the third Major of the JLPGA season, concluded with zero players under par overall. After the third round, it seemed that perhaps Mika Miyazato might be the lone sub-par finisher, as she sat at 3-under, following a 1-over par Saturday that saw her separate herself from her nearest competitor by 5 shots. It was a brutal moving day when most players were moving backwards. Nobody shot under par on day 3. Going into Sunday, a 5 shot lead at 3-under overall looked insurmountable on a course that wasn’t going to allow anybody to go low enough to mount a comeback. But looks can be deceiving.

Mika Miyazato
Round 4 proved a daunting test for Mika, as her mettle was measured in full. Miki Saiki surged to 1-over with a 3-under final round. She was joined by Erika Kikuchi at 1-over following a 1-under 71 round. Meanwhile, things were falling apart for Mika Miyazato. She crashed to earth on the front nine, going out with a 4-over 40 at the turn, which had her at 1-over overall. Although she bounced back with birdies on 11 and 13, she gave those right back with back to back bogeys on 14 and 15. Standing of the 18th tee, Mika had to salvage a miserable day with a closing birdie or be forced into a playoff. Staring down a 537 yard par 5, Mika need to be great when it counted. Standing over a 20 foot left to right putt, almost a dog leg shaped putt, it would take a sensational effort to end things in regulation. Mika was up to the task.

Mika Miyazato
And so Mika Miyazato writes her name into the history books as a 2-time Japan Women’s Open winner. She also won in 2010. Indeed, both of her 2 JLPGA wins so far have been at the national Major. The Okinawa-native finished at even par for the tournament, the only player not over par. She takes home 28,000,000 Japanese Yen for her victory, or around 287,000 US Dollars.
BIRDIES
Fourth place finisher Rikako Morita continues to lead the JLPGA money list at ¥98,763,571, as well as Player of the Year points.
Yumi Matsuraba was low amateur, finishing tied for 17th.
Shiho Toyonaga was awarded a prize for her 3rd round hole in one of the par 3 14th.
BOGEYS
Ai MIyazato struggled mightily with a T45 finish at 17-over. Ai is one of the world’s greatest golfers. It just wasn’t her week. Sometimes that happens, even to the greats.
Ditto for the great Mi-Jeong Jeon at 11-over and T32.
