Shanshan Feng Wins 2013 Reignwood LPGA Classic

We’ve seen iconic national trailblazers win inaugural LPGA events in their home country before. A few years ago, the incredible success of Yani Tseng was a driving force behind the creation of the Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship. In its first event, Yani stormed to the 2011 title in front of galleries befitting her rock star status in her homeland. Maybe nobody has changed the face of the LPGA, or women’s golf worldwide, as much as Se Ri Pak. She exploded onto the LPGA in 1998, spawning an entire generation of players who continue the wave of South Korean golf success today. Inbee Park, Na Yeon Choi, Jiyai Shin and many others are a result of Pak’s inspiration. In 2002, Se Ri won the first Sports Today CJ Nine Bridges Classic (today the LPGA KEB-HanaBank Championship). There was a 2001 event scheduled, but canceled due to the events of September 11th.

However, while Yani and Se Ri also won their respective native soil inaugural LPGA events, maybe nobody has done so as dramatically as Shanshan Feng. Se Ri bested Carin Koch by 3 strokes in 2002 in South Korea. Yani Tseng ran away from Amy Yang and Azahara Munoz by 5 strokes in 2011 in Taiwan. Neither player needed fireworks on the 72nd hole to capture victory. Standing on the par 5 18th tee at the 2013 Reignwood LPGA Classic, trailing Stacy Lewis by 1 shot, Shanshan needed something big. With Lewis capable of birdying the final hole, Feng would have no choice but to be aggressive with her 2nd shot. And boy, was she! While Stacy laid up, playing for par and putting the onus on Feng, Shanshan took an attacking line over the water and rough. Right after impact, Shanshan quickly hung her head as it looked like her shot would be short and right, maybe even in the water. But then everything that could go for her, went for her. Her shot bounced high out of the front rough right onto the green. The shot was going fast enough to reach the back of the green, but instead it hit the pin, slowing it down to a stop a few feet away from the hole for an eagle chance. Birdie was almost a guarantee. Suddenly, the pressure was back on Lewis. Feng would drain the eagle putt while Stacy could only manage par. From 1 shot down to a 1 shot victory, Shanshan stood alongside Yani Tseng and Se Ri Pak as native daughters who came through for their home crowd.

In the days and weeks to come, I hope Shanshan drinks in all the adulation that will come her way. It was her Major victory at the 2012 Wegmans LPGA Championship that was instrumental in there even being an LPGA event in China. What she did on Sunday at the 2013 Reignwood LPGA Classic might be even more important. She came home, and in front of her entire country she got the job done, and she did so in one of the most dramatic finishes in recent LPGA history. You can bet there were little girls and junior players all over China who watched Feng and will carry this victory as inspiration that one day maybe they can have their own golfing glory. It was a fairytale ending that might just lead in a few years to a new generation of LPGA talent from China.
