Give Sara Errani a lot of credit. The young lady has heart to match her game. Although she is currently 0-2 in round robin play at the 2013 TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships, she gave Victoria Azarenka all she could handle in the first set of their match on Tuesday. Today, she followed that performance by throwing the kitchen sink at Li Na, albeit in a losing effort. Despite the tenacity of Errani, Li Na was able to eventually battle through a second set that lasted over an hour by itself to finally win, 6-3 7-6 (5). Sara is in a big hole now, being 0-2 in round robin play.
The upset of the day was Jelena Jankovic taking down Victoria Azarenka 6-3 6-4. Or was it? Sure, Vika is the world #2. But she came into Istanbul on a 3 match losing streak and was pushed early in her first match by Sara Errani before pulling things together. Meanwhile, Jeca’s game has been trending upward. I’ll be honest, I thought she was done as a top 8 type player. I am happy she’s proven me oh so wrong. Jeca hadn’t beaten a top 2 player in 3 years until her win over Vika here. She will next take on Li Na to see who will have early control of the White Group. Over in the Red Group, Serena Williams cruised past Agnieszka Radwanska 2 and 4. Serena sits atop the Red Group at 2-0. Nobody is surprised. LOL!
