Suzann Pettersen Thwarts Early Fourth Round Challenge From Azahara Munoz At 2013 Sunrise LPGA Taiwan To Win Late Going Away

Suzann Pettersen (click to enlarge)

With an assist from Azahara Munoz, Suzann Pettersen found a way to make the fourth round of the 2013 Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship interesting early on before closing it out comfortably late. Give credit to Azahara. She came out firing, looking to make a match of it, and she did. By the time she sunk her putt on #12, it was her 4th birdie against no bogeys in the round. Meanwhile, Suzann was on a rollercoaster of 2 birdies and 2 bogeys through 12. After the way Pettersen had separated herself from the field for three rounds in Taiwan, suddenly she was in a tie for the lead and looking at a fight down the stretch. Ah, but the great Norweigan is a fighter. No sooner was it game on that Suzann put the game face on. She sank back to back birdies on 13 and 14, while Azahara bogeyed 13 and 16. Suddenly, Suzann reclaimed a 4 shot lead. She would add another birdie on 18 for good measure to wrap up a 9-under 5 shot victory. If you only read the score from day to day, it might seem that Suzann had a routine (for her) wire to wire victory. For three rounds it was routine. But in round four, I am happy to see somebody stepped up to at least mount a challenge. It said volumes about both players; that Azahara is not going to let a large opening hole deficit in a final round deter her, and that Suzann is fully capable of digging deep when she needs to when pushed. It’s the 4th LPGA win of 2013 for Suzann and her 14th career LPGA victory.

BIRDIES

Se Ri Pak continues to show renewed vigor with a T5 finish. Her 3 Top 10s so far this year have come in 3 of her last 4 tournaments.

Moriya Jutanugarn finished T11. It was a much needed boost in points as she closes the gap between herself and first place Caroline Masson in the Rookie of the Year standings.

Mina Harigae notched her first top 10 of the year with an impressive T5. She was an amateur sensation several years ago and won professionally 3 times on the Symetra Tour. Let’s hope for continued great play from Mina.
