I don’t always do posts for the first round of golf events. Very often, although not always, I’ll wait until Saturday to see how storylines are developing. But the Pornanong Phatlum fan in me had to at least give a few words of praise for the job she did in the first round of the 2013 Lorena Ochoa Invitational. Pornanong’s sole LPGA victory came at the 2012 HSBC Brazil Cup. However, that’s not considered an “official” event, so she doesn’t have credit for an official LPGA win. I certainly hope that changes this weekend. If she continues to play as she did on day one, dropping in 7 birdies in her first 13 holes including the first 3 holes, she’ll have a terrific chance. She did give a shot back on 14, but her 6-under opening effort was good enough to lead the field overnight. Incidentally, while Pornanong lacks an official LPGA victory, she has won on the Ladies European Tour. Waen (her nickname) won the 2012 Hero Women’s Indian Open. In fact, she has won that event three times: 2008, 2009 and 2012. However, it was only in 2010 that the Ladies European Tour began to co-sanction the event with the Ladies Asian Golf Tour. The event has only been played 6 times so far, but Pornanong has won half of those events. The other three winners were very impressive names in Yani Tseng, Laura Davies and Caroline Hedwall. There is so much more golf to play at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, which is why I hesitate to start drawing any conclusions about how things might play out. Certainly, win or lose, I hope Pornanong is in contention to the end.
