Instead of a year in review focusing on overall achievements, I thought this time I’d do a countdown of the top 30 money list leaders from the WTA and LPGA. For the WTA, singles, doubles and mixed are combined for this top 30. Number 8 on the money list from each tour are Petra Kvitova (WTA) and Beatriz Recari (LPGA).

PETRA KVITOVA (Czech Republic)

2013 Official WTA Prizemoney: $2,853,474

Best Results: WINNER Toray Pan Pacific Open, WINNER Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, RUNNER-UP New Haven Open at Yale, RUNNER-UP BNP Paribas Katowice Open, QF Wimbledon, SF WTA Tour Championships, SF China Open, QF Qatar Total Open, QF BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, QF Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, QF Western & Southern Open, QF Open GDF Suez, QF Southern California Open

Petra Kvitova continued her winning ways in 2013, capturing titles in Tokyo and Dubai. The 23-year old Czech star also finished runner-up at Yale and Katowice. Her 2 titles brings her career total to double digits with 11. Where I’d love to see her improve in 2014 is in the Majors. After 2 semis and 1 quarter in 2012 Majors, Petra only reached a quarterfinal once, at Wimbledon. She has the game to beat anybody, anywhere, anytime.

And that’s the rub with Petra. She is so vastly talented, but doesn’t always put those talents together in a complete match. If she did so more consistently, she’d be a real threat to ascend to the world #1 ranking. However, even considering that, as yet, untapped potential all credit must go to Petra for what she has accomplished. 2 wins and 2 runners-up is a great year. I expect more terrific play from her in 2014. And the big if…if she brings her A game to more of her matches…well, then she’d be close to unbeatable.

BEATRIZ RECARI (Spain)

Beatriz Recari had her best year ever on the LPGA in 2013. The 26-year old won 2 events, the Kia Classic and Marathon Classic. She also had her first ever top 10 in a Major, a T9 at the Evian Championship. In her first 3 seasons on tour, Beatriz finished outside the year end top 30 on the money list. In 2013, she was 8th. She recorded the lowest scoring average of her career at 70.87. Her 2013 prizemoney, $1,030,614, was better than her 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons combined, 933,139. Participating in her first Solheim Cup, she gave Team Europe 3 valuable points, going 3-1-0. In short, Beatriz Recari was on the rise in 2013.

So the question going into 2014 is which way will Beatriz go? Was 2013 an aberration? Will she slip back to the pack? Will she maintain the level she reached this year or will she continue to ascend even higher? It’s all going to come down to whether she continues to putt well. She was 7th in putts per GIR and 9th in overall putting. She’s not long, only 114th in driving distance. But in 2013 she was living proof that you drive for show and putt for dough.
