Victoria Azarenka Advances In Second Round Of 2014 Brisbane International; Withdrawals Mount As Sabine Lisicki and Ashleigh Barty Pull Out

It was a bit of a letdown day at the Brisbane International. It was nice to see Victoria Azarenka back on court winning, taking out Casey Dellacqua 3 and 1. The problem was there was little actual women’s play, on a day where Maria Sharapova and Sabine Lisicki were scheduled to be on court. Unfortunately, Masha’s opponent, Ashleigh Barty, withdrew with a torn thigh (ouch!). Hope that she heals soon. Sabine Lisicki was supposed to play Stefanie Voegele, but Sabine had intestinal issues and couldn’t play. I hope Sabine get well soon and is 100% for Melbourne. Even Angelique Kerber’s victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was a bit marred by Anastasia needing to retire with a left leg problem. Not a good round of women’s tennis for the Brisbane International. This is on top of Caroline Wozniacki pulling out before the event even started. On a positive note, at least Sunshine is now engaged to boyfriend…make that, fiancé…Rory McIlroy. He popped the question and she said YES! Congrats to Sunshine and Rory. 🙂
