2014 Australian Open Women’s Singles Day 8; Victoria Azarenka Moves Forward, Maria Sharapova Moves Out

When Serena Williams lost to Ana Ivanovic, some asked who the favorite to win the 2014 Australian Open women’s crown would be, offering up Ana and Li Na as new top guns. Well, have they forgotten that the 2-time defending champion, Victoria Azarenka, is still in the tournament? If they did, Vika reminded everybody who the Queen of Melbourne has been the last couple of years with a straight set 3 and 2 dismissal of Sloane Stephens. It was a rematch of their controversial semifinal of last year. But this time, there would be no controversy (other than the pair trading some body shots).

The player who potentially benefited most from the upset of Serena was Maria Sharapova. Masha is a proven career Grand Slam winner, but despite her career win against Williams at Wimbledon 2004, she is 2-15, including 14 losses in a row, against Serena. Well, she wasn’t able to take advantage of Serena’s absence as Dominika Cibulkova pulled the second big upset in two days, taking out Masha 3-6 6-4 6-1. But this is less of an upset than it would appear. Their career head to head is now 3-3, so Dominika has been able to play Masha well. Also, Sharapova struggled two rounds ago against Karin Knapp and had some shaky moments one round ago against Alize Cornet. She was able to escape those matches, but not against the diminutive Dominika.
