2014 Australian Open Women’s Singles Day 9: Li Na Surging, Eugenie Bouchard Rising

It’s amazing how one point can change everything. A few rounds ago against Lucie Safarova, Li Na faced a match point against her that would have knocked her out of the 2014 Australian Open. It would have been a crushing end for a player who has shown championship potential down under in recent years. Instead, Li Na saved that match point, mounted a successful comeback and hasn’t looked back since. After blowing out the dangerous Ekaterina Makarova 2 and love in the fourth round, Li Na romped through Flavia Pennetta 2 and 2 in the quarterfinals, building big leads in both sets on her way to victory. This marks the fourth Australian Open semifinal appearance in the last five years for Li Na. She has become quite the fan favorite in Melbourne. Even with 2-time defending champion Victoria Azarenka still in the tournament, there is a groundswell of good will among fans hoping for Li Na to emerge triumphant.

But Li Na isn’t the only player endearing herself to the fans in Melbourne. Genie’s Army, the growing legion of supporters for Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard, has ridden along with the young talented 19-year old all the way to a semifinal berth. In a tough back and forth match, Genie ousted Ana Ivanovic 5-7 7-5 6-2, making Ana’s celebration in beating Serena Williams the previous round short lived. There’s always a new young force in tennis. Perhaps Genie is the new star of the sport. Her belief that she belongs at this point in a Major is what resonates with me. She doesn’t think reaching the semis is anything out of the ordinary.

“It’s something I’ve been doing since I was five years old and working my whole life for and sacrificing a lot of things for. It’s not exactly a surprise. I always expect myself to do well. I’m happy to have gone through this step. I’m not done. I have a match on Thursday.”  – Eugenie Bouchard

Although she did disappoint some of her male fans with an answer to one question. 🙂
