Li Na, Dominika Cibulkova Reach 2014 Australian Open Final

Will the third time be the charm? With a hard-hitting 6-2 6-4 victory over rising young star Eugenie Bouchard, China’s Li Na advanced to her third Australian Open final in four years. Early on, it looked like a mismatch, with the #4 seed Li building a quick 5-0 lead in the first set. However, Bouchard would fight back, winning four of the next five games, dropping the first set but establishing a break lead in the second 2-0. But Li Na, who is known to sometimes lose focus in matches, pulled it together to reassert her superior play. In the end, Genie showed she might be the future of women’s tennis but Li Na is still the better player in the present. She put the exclamation point on that fact with a rousing match point.

Standing on the other side of the net in the final will be the 20th seed, Dominika Cibulkova. While known as a giant killer on the women’s side, the diminutive Cibulkova probably wasn’t on very many people’s draw sheet to make it this far. But after knocking out third seed Maria Sharapova two rounds ago, she has blown eleventh seed Simona Halep (3 and love) and fifth seed Agnieszka Radwanska (1 and 2) off the court. Aga had looked brilliant in ousting the 2-time defending champion Victoria Azarenka in the quarters, but looked overwhelmed against the surging Cibulkova, falling behind 1-6 0-4. Radwanska did win a couple of games at the end but Dominika was just too much, closing it out 6-1 6-2. Domi is the first Slovakian woman to reach the final of a Major. I would certainly say Li Na is the favorite. I don’t think after beating Masha and Aga that Domi will have any fear of Li Na at all. I just wonder if the pressure of being in her first Major final might be a bit overwhelming. Li Na has been in this position before so I think she will handle it better. However, I also thought Aga would handle being in the semis better, but Domi proved me wrong. Will she prove me wrong  again on Saturday?
