With the top seeds getting first round byes, the action at the 2014 Sony Open heated up in round two. The season’s second “mini-Major” saw the top 4 players, Serena Williams, Li Na, Agnieszka Radwanska and Maria Sharapova move through without incident. Li Na didn’t even have to play as unfortunately Alisa Kleybanova was unable to compete due to illness. 6-time Sony Open winner and defending champion Serena had a little bit of a tussle on her hands in the first set with Yaroslava Shvedova, going all the way to 9-7 in a tiebreak. But once Serena put the first set away it was smooth sailing in the second. It was good to see Masha handle up and coming player Kurumi Nara 3 and 4. Considering how shaky Sharapova has looked early this season, that was potentially an upset in waiting. The biggest upset of the day was 7th seed Jelena Jankovic falling to Varvara Lepchenko. Jeca has been playing very well, so it was a shock for me to see her bounced in her first match in Miami.
