Stacy Lewis Wins 2014 North Texas LPGA Shootout

Here’s a piece of free advice. If there’s a shootout in the Lone Star State and there’s only one Texan involved, that’s the person to put your money on. With Meena Lee tied with her after 3 rounds and Michelle Wie making a charge until bogeying her final two holes, Stacy Lewis came out with guns blazing, firing 6 birdies and 1 eagle to offset one misfire bogey. Lewis will reascend to world #2 following her 6 shot victory, her first win since last year’s Ricoh Women’s British Open. She also ends a pattern of runner-up near misses by finding the bull’s eye in front of family and friends, most notably her adoring young nephew, Cole.

Stacy’s victory adds to the resurgence of American winners that has so-far defined the 2014 LPGA season. She joins fellow countrywomen Jessica Korda, Paula Creamer, Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie as champions…and it’s just turned May. There are a lot of tournaments still to be played, including 4 more Majors. Stacy, Lexi and Michelle are 1-2-3 in the Rolex Player of the Year race after this event. Of course, much will change as the season plays out but I can’t help but be excited about what these players are accomplishing. I know it doesn’t make up for last year’s loss, but I can’t help but think back to how heartbroken these players were after losing the Solheim Cup. Not only do I love seeing Americans winning so much this year, but the fact that all of the winners were 2013 Solheim Cup members makes it even sweeter.

However, today belongs to one woman and that’s Stacy Lewis. She separated herself from the field. Despite all the 2nd place finishes, it could reasonably be said that at this moment she is the best player in the world. I don’t mean to disrespect Inbee Park at all. She worked hard to get the #1 spot and is worthy of it. All I am saying is that if they both were to continue to play as they are now, Stacy would usurp the top spot eventually. Inbee certainly is capable of taking her play to another level, as she did last year when she won 3 straight Majors. She’ll need to if she wants to hold off Stacy (and Lydia…and Lexi…and maybe even Michelle).
