The last time an Italian player, male or female, reached the final of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia was in 1985 when Raffaela Reggi won the title with a 6-4 6-4 victory over American Vicki Nelson-Dunbar. Sara Errani ended that drought by becoming the first Italian player to reach the final in 29 years. Certainly, she would like to duplicate Reggi’s winning ways. Sara has earned her right to vie for the title with impressive wins over Li Na in the quarterfinals and Jelena Jankovic in the semis. But guess who’s waiting in the final. Serena. The reigning queen of tennis beat Ana Ivanovic 6-1 3-6 6-1 to punch her ticket to the final. It will be interesting to see if the crowd can lift Errani. Serena usually has a lot of fan support wherever she plays, but you can count on the audience in Rome vociferously cheering every positive play from Sara. However, if Serena comes out and sprints to a 3-0, 4-1, 5-2 or some similar opening advantage then the crowd could be taken out of the equation. It should be interesting to see if Sara can overcome the greatest player in the game.
