Shirley Spork is one of the 13 founding members of the LPGA. Before she was a pioneer of professional women’s golf and a celebrated teacher of the game, she was a standout at Eastern Michigan University. There was no women’s program at EMU when she played, so she had to pay her own way to play intercollegiate competitions. When she won the inaugural National Collegiate Championship in 1947 she wasn’t even celebrated upon her return to EMU. Now, 67 years later she finally received her varsity letter. Although this took place last month, I chose to still post it now because its always an honor to listen to true pioneers of women’s athletics. There is a little introductory commentary on the video until Shirley’s interview around the 2 minute mark.
