Oh irony, why are you so delicious? On a day when…somebody…was winning a Major golf tournament, Caroline Wozniacki also tasted victory at the 2014 Istanbul Cup. While Sunshine’s title doesn’t hold the same level of distinction of that other person’s title, it still marks Caroline’s 22nd WTA singles title and her first of 2014. The top seed and former world #1 has won at least one event every year from 2008 through the present. Her 6-1 6-1 domination of 2nd seed Roberta Vinci lasted only 67 minutes. As a bonus for me, it was great to see Hall of Famer Monica Seles take part in the trophy ceremony.
Mona Barthel has a bit of a streak going herself. The 24-year old German won the 2014 Collector Swedish Open, making it 3 years in a row with a title. It’s Mona’s first clay court singles championship, earned by defeating Chanelle Scheepers 6-3 7-6 (3). It was a mine field for the seeds in Bastad, as none of them made it to the quarterfinals. That hadn’t happened since the 2009 Hobart International. The 6’1″ Barthel has a big game, if she could just find more consistency. There’s no reason she can’t be a regular top 20 or 25 player.
