Mi Jung Hur Wins 2014 Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic

You’re standing on the 11th tee in the final round of an LPGA tournament. You haven’t won a tournament in 5 years. You have a tenuous 1 shot lead (17-under to 16-under) over a player who has been, along with Inbee Park, at the height of dominance on the women’s tour in recent years. What do you do? Some players would…and have…choked up the lead coming home, giving in to the bigger name with the bigger resume. Here’s what Mi Jung Hur did. She nailed an uphill breaker putt of maybe 20 to 25 feet on 11 for birdie. Then Mi Jung stuck her tee shot on the par 3 13th to 1 foot for an easy birdie. On the next hole, the par 4 14th, Hur duplicated the form she showed on 13, but this time knocking her approach shot to 1 foot for another tap in birdie. She knocked in another birdie putt on the par 3 16th from about 6 feet. Her irons were just dialed in. And with those 4 birdies over a span of 6 holes, Mi Jung surged to 21-under par, winning by 4 shots over Stacy Lewis and breaking the tournament scoring record in the process.

That was a clutch performance by Mi Jung. As I mentioned, there have been players who have wilted in those circumstances. She went completely in the opposite direction by stepping on the gas and leaving the field behind on the back 9. Hur has been in contention at Portaland and Evian coming into Prattville. It was terrific to see all of that great play finally culminate with a title, her first since winning the 2009 Safeway Classic, especially with her father as her caddie.
