I am very fond of Angelique Kerber. I really am. Actually, I am very fond of 90% of the players on the WTA Tour, in terms of being a fan. But naturally, there are some that rise above the pack. Unfortunately for this fan, Angie has been mowing down my top favorites lately. She edged Madison Keys a few weeks ago to win the Family Circle Cup. That one really stung. This week, she was at it again, taking out three-time defending champion Maria Sharapova at the 2015 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in the second round, my other favorite Madison, Madison Brengle, in the semifinals and Little Miss Sunshine, Caroline Wozniacki, in the final. Of course, although all of those things are true, I say this with tongue-in-cheek a little. Angie has a job to do out there and lately she’s looking more like the great player she was a few years ago. Not that Sunshine didn’t push Angie in the final, which needed a tight final set to give Kerber the win, 3-6 6-1 7-5. Much like she did against Madison Keys in the Family Circle Cup final, Angie needed a final set comeback to win it. Wozniacki will no doubt regret not closing things out when she was up 5-3 30-15 in the decider. Although she is on an 11-0 streak on clay at the moment, I still need to see more before I call Angie a contender at Roland Garros. First of all, Family Circle Cup was on green clay, so she just shifted over to the European style clay this week. Also, she was on the verge of losing to both Keys and Wozniacki. There are only so many times a player can tempt fate before somebody makes them pay for falling behind. We’ll see over the next month if Kerber can keep up her winning ways. One thing of which I’m sure; if she does keep winning, it will probably come at the expense of half a dozen of my top favorite players. And you know something? That’s perfectly ok. Keep doing your thing, Angie! 🙂
