This is the one tennis fans have been waiting to see ever since the women’s draw was created. If there is to be any upset of Serena Williams early in Roland Garros 2015, it was most likely to come via her third round match with Victoria Azarenka. The 27th seeded (that seems weird to say about Vika) Azarenka took care of Lucie Hradecka 2 and 3 to set up a third round match worthy of a Major final. In fact, these two have played one another multiple times in the US Open final. Injuries took Vika away from the tour, which is why she is ranked/seeded so low. For a while it looked as if Serena might be the one who didn’t make it to round 3 as she dropped the first set in her 2nd round match to Anna-Lena Friedsam. Eventually, the top seed and world #1 righted her ship and moved past the feisty Friedsam, 5-7 6-3 6-3. I don’t expect those struggles to have any bearing on Serena going up against Vika. They will both be ready to play.
In a match-up of dynamic up and coming future Major winners (at least I think they will be future Major winners), Madison Keys played arguably her most impressive match since knocking both Petra Kvitova and Venus Williams out of this year’s Australian Open. Maddie was absolutely sensational in beating Belinda Bencic, 6-0 6-3. If Maddie plays to her capabilities, she can beat anybody. Of course, as a young developing player she is still trying to find the consistency to match her talent. What’s more, waiting for her in the next round is the very tough Timea Bacsinszky, who already has won two tournaments this year and scorched Tereza Smitkova, 6-2 6-0. Keys will need to be as good as she was today if she hopes to knock off Bacsinszky. I believe Maddie is the more skilled player, but Timea is more consistent at the moment from match to match…so we will see who emerges triumphant.
