Expectations for Roland Garros 2008 champion Ana Ivanovic were not terribly high coming into Roland Garros 2015. After a terrific 2014 season, she’s hit a few road bumps this year. After being taken the distance in her first two matches in Paris, perhaps her game is starting to come together. Facing an opponent in Donna Vekic who was more than capable of upsetting her, Ana played her best match of the fortnight so far. In fact, Ivanovic’s 6-0 6-3 win over Vekic might be her best performance in a few months. The 7th seeded Ana will get a chance to prove her play against Donna wasn’t a temporary flash of past brilliance as she will take on the extremely tough 9th seed, Ekaterina Makarova in the round of 16.
Speaking of a best result in a certain period of time, 21st seeded Garbine Muguruza scored a terrific win in upsetting 11th seeded Angelique Kerber, 4-6 6-2 6-2. Kerber entered Roland Garros 2015 riding a great comeback clay season that saw her win in Charleston (on green clay) and in Stuttgart. Garbine is one of three young up and coming players, along with Madison Keys and Karolina Pliskova, that I look at and say…wow, she has IT. Her game, like Keys and Pliskova, is built to win a Major. All three of them are still developing their consistency, but they look like future superstars. I didn’t think Garbine would get by Angie, to be honest. Not yet. A year or two from now, Garbine will be the higher ranked player, in my opinion. But perhaps I forgot about how Muguruza bounced Serena Williams out of Roland Garros last year. She’s fearless. I don’t feel she’s ready to win this event presently. Her next match against Flavia Pennetta will be tough. If she gets by that, she would face either Maria Sharapova or Lucie Safarova. It’s a hard road. But eventually she will be ready to win 7 in a row and become a Major champion.
