After a promising start to the 2015 Aegon International, Eugenie Bouchard unfortunately suffered an abdominal injury in her match with Belinda Bencic. It affected her serving greatly in the first set. After falling behind in the second set, 4-6 0-3, Genie wisely called it a day. She says she’ll play Wimbledon next week even if she has to play on one leg. To give herself a chance to compete in the upcoming Major, retiring before her injury worsened was the best move.
Bencic will face British (by way of Australia) wildcard Johanna Konta. The 24-year old Konta, ranked 139th in the world, was allowed wildcard entry into Eastbourne by the British Tennis Association. She has taken advantage of the opportunity by beating world #8 Ekaterina Makarova and world #20 Garbine Muguruza en route to the quarterfinals. Regardless of what happens against Bencic, Johanna has proven worthy of not only this wildcard but also the wildcard she has been given into Wimbledon next week despite an 0-6 singles record there.
