As the final point was played in her 2015 Rogers Cup semifinal win against Serena Williams, young 18 year old rising star Belinda Bencic didn’t quite know what to do. Her gaze went everywhere, her hands went to the top of her head. She smiled, she cried. In her post match interview, Belinda could barely find the words to describe what had just happened. The new Swiss Miss had shown incredible fortitude fighting back from 1-5 down in the first set to hand Serena only her second loss of the season, 3-6 7-5 6-4. While it is true that Serena did not play particularly well, you still have to give Belinda her just due. No, this wasn’t the same as when Petra Kvitova beat Serena in straight sets in Madrid. Still, there have been plenty of times where Serena did not have her A game or her B game this year and still won. There have been times this year when opponents had their chance to beat Serena but you wonder if they truly believed they could finish the job. Belinda did not melt when the heat was on. For her efforts, she will take on Simona Halep in the Rogers Cup Final. Most tennis aficionados were looking forward to Serena vs Simona in the final, but maybe the player we need to take a better look at right now is the fast rising Belinda Bencic.
