Hyo-Joo Kim Wins 2016 Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic

The 2016 LPGA season crowned its first champion of the season as South Korea’s Hyo-Joo Kim fired a final round 7-under 66 (par is 73 on this course) to win the 2016 Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic by 2 shots at 18-under overall. It was definitely the way to win an event, with a strong finish. Her only hiccup was missing the green short on her second shot to the par 4 16th. She chipped to 6 feet past the hole and suffered her only bogey of the day when she missed the comeback putt. Like the true champion that Kim is, she turned around and immediately birdied the next hole, the par 3 17th. Her tee shot to the green on the 17th was a gorgeous right to left bender to 4 feet of the hole. Hyo-Joo now has at least one LPGA win the past three years. Her first, the 2014 Evian Championship, was won as a non-member. The 20-year old emerging star won her way onto the LPGA tour and looks like she will keep winning for years to come.

The nature of sports is if there is joy for one, there is disappointment for others. It’s relative, of course. Stacy Lewis further showed why she, along with Lydia Ko and Inbee Park, is one of the top 3 players on tour with a 2nd place finish at 16-under. At the same time, she has to be so frustrated with all the second place finishes in her career. The 11-time LPGA winner didn’t have a victory in 2015, but did come up the bridesmaid 6 times. And while 11 LPGA victories are more than 99% of tour players will ever achieve, her 22 2nd place finishes speak to just how all-time great her career stats would be had she won even a third of those runners-up. Switching to another player, I am always happy to see Pornanong Phatlum record a top 5 with a solid 15-under score. That’s especially true in the season opener. However, she did have a few opportunities to put pressure on Hyo-Joo Kim, but just couldn’t quite make those clutch putts when she needed them. Nevertheless, it’s a strong start to the season for Waen. I feel it’s a matter of when, not if, she wins her first official title. And, to finish, I cannot comment on this event without congratulating Ha Na Jang for her albatross hole-in-one on a par 4, the first par 4 ace in LPGA tour history, during round 3.
