After winning the singles title at the 2016 Mutua Madrid Open, her 12th career WTA singles crown, Simona Halep said it was the best day of her life. I would say to stay tuned. Even greater days are coming. Barring injury, before her career is over Simona will be a Major champion. The only seeded player to make the women’s singles quarterfinals in Madrid, Halep’s 6-2 6-4 victory over Dominika Cibulkova should give her a boost of confidence with Roland Garros around the corner. She was runner-up in Paris in 2014, losing a tough three set war with Maria Sharapova. Serena Williams, even without a title yet in 2016, still deserves to be the favorite in any event she plays. However, after Serena…and perhaps Victoria Azarenka…I give Simona a very good chance to have her next “best day of her life” on the terre battue of France.
