Lexi Thompson Wins 2016 World Ladies Championship Salonpas Cup (JLPGA)

Lexi Thompson went to the Land of the Rising Sun to win her first LPGA of Japan tournament, the 2016 World Ladies Championship Salonpas Cup. She follows in a line of LPGA players, including Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb, Beth Daniels and most recently Morgan Pressel, who have won the first Major of the year on the JLPGA. Her 2-shot 13-under victory was highlighted by her destruction of the par 5 9th, where 2 eagles and 2 birdies had her 6-under on that hole alone. Of course, I am a fan of Lexi…but I must be honest in saying I was pulling for Ha-Neul Kim to take this one. The South Korean star has performed so beautifully this year that a Major would have been the perfect punctuation. Instead, she settled for 3rd at 6-under, 7 shots back. So even if Lexi hadn’t come to play this event, Ayaka Watanabe, at 11-under, would have denied Ha-Neul the title. By the way, I didn’t count current LPGA rookie In-Gee Chun as the most recent LPGA player to win the Salonpas Cup because I meant players who were LPGA players at the time they won Salonpas Cup, which In-Gee was not. She was a LPGA of Korea (KLPGA) member at the time.

  1. Congratulations to Lexi and i might add to Ayaka Watanabe who did what she could to keep Lexi from running away with the win. Also I just saw from the LPGA that Ariya Jutanugarn pulled out the win in Prattville Alabama for her first win on the LPGA circuit

  2. Saw that Lexi had a translator at the trophy presentation for the Japanese crowd. Geez Lexi you could not speak a little Japanese? So, Americans lay off the Koreans, for not speaking English well at LPGA events..at least they are trying. Back when Se Ri Pak started winning on the LPGA, former Australian player Jan Stephenson said “Asians are killing the (LPGA) Tour”, referring to the large number of Korean-born players who were winning on tour, and calling for quotas on international players, which is ironic because she was also an international player. I personally think that the Asians have helped grow the LPGA. It, like ladies tennis is much more of an international game now.

    • There is a video in my “Ariya Feted” post…the first video, the one in English…where the two commentators praise Michael Whan for reaching out and embracing the world…changing from prior attitudes…a great move by the Commish.
