Following his runner-up finish at the 2016 Mutua Madrid Open, Andy Murray announced he was parting with coach Amelie Mauresmo. I am saddened to hear of the demise of this partnership, but considering the time constraints Amelie has right now, it probably was best they end amicably now. It was always going to be tough for any coach to follow the success Andy had with previous “super coach” Ivan Lendl. Two Majors (US Open, Wimbledon) and an Olympic Gold were a high standard. Plus, although Murray, under Lendl’s guidance, beat Novak Djokovic for both of his Major wins, that was a far different monster than what Djokovic has now become. Nole is at the height of his powers. I’m not sure any coach could magically just make Andy better than his Serbian rival. I hope more of the top men will consider choosing a female coach. Gender should not matter. There are men and women capable of coaching top male players.
