Garbine Muguruza, Samantha Stosur First Into Women’s Semifinals At Roland Garros 2016

It was a great run to the Roland Garros 2016 quarterfinals for American Shelby Rogers. Alas, that would be as far as she would go. #4 seed Garbine Muguruza of Spain reached her first ever Roland Garros singles semifinals with a 7-5 6-3 triumph over Shelby. Since dropping the first set she played in this championship, Mugu has strung together 10 straight winning sets. This puts her one step away from her second Major final, following her runner-up finish at Wimbledon 2015. However, standing in her way will be Roland Garros 2010 runner-up Samantha Stosur. The 21st seed from Australia is a former US Open champion, beating Serena in the 2011 final. Stosur can beat Garbine…or anybody else for that matter…but she can also get run off the court 1 and 1. She is so unpredictable. I guess I will go with Mugu, but it’s a nervous pick.

  1. Methinks Garbi will hit through Stosur, and hopefully meet Serena in the finals. That would be a good match IMHO, I think Mugu is the only one who could possibly beat Serena.

    • That’s the ideal final for sure of those left in the draw. Although Stosur beat her in 2010 at the US Open, I think Serena would remember that and smoke Stosur in two quick sets here. Mugu is the better bet. Then there’s always Kiki Bertens….:)
