With Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova absent from Roland Garros 2017, three former women’s singles champions were left in the draw – Svetlana Kuznetsova (2009), Francesca Schiavone (2010) and the defending champion Garbiñe Muguruza (2016). With Schiavone and Muguruza facing one another in round one, at best there would be only two former title holders still in the draw by Tuesday. That’s what happened as Svetlana beat Christina McHale in her opener and, as expected, Garbiñe took out Francesca 6-2 6-4. Since her career breakthrough in last year’s final, beating the supreme Serena Williams, Muguruza has not been able to find a consistent groove. I thought that might happen, as it did to others (Li Na for example), who have reached Major success in the past. Not everybody keeps piling up tournament wins like Serena, Venus, Masha and Vika. Also, let’s keep in mind that at 23, Garbiñe has plenty of time for success. That said, with big name champions either absent or returning from injury, this would be a good time for Muguruza and others to take advantage.
