Pornanong Phatlum Wins 2013 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters

Pornanong Phatlum is a winner. She’d won 7 Ladies Asian Golf Tour events, with 1 co-sanctioned Ladies European Tour event (2012 Women’s Indian Open) going into the 2013 Omega Dubai Ladies Open. Playing well, she trailed world #3 Stacy Lewis, a player who has proven herself to be a winner on the grandest of scales, by 2 shots to begin the final round. Waen watched Stacy, a 2-time LPGA Major winner and former world #1, birdie 2, 3, 8 and 10 to reach 15-under. But Waen wasn’t shrinking from the challenge. The rising Thai star had birdies on 2, 7, 8, 13 and 14 to cut the lead to 1 shot. After both Stacy and Waen bogeyed the par 3 15th and parred the 16th, it was Lewis 1-up with 2 holes to play.

Both players hit brilliant approach shots on 17, but it was only Waen who walked away with a birdie as Stacy missed a five foot putt. All square on the 18th tee, Waen would close the show with a laser approach on 18 that left a tap-in birdie to seal the come from behind victory. It’s these kind of performances, these kind of pressure moments, that define championship mettle. This is Waen’s 2nd Ladies European Tour victory after the 2012 Hero Women’s Indian Open co-sponsored event, but it could be legitimately argued that this was the biggest stage with the brightest lights that she’s ever turned in a victory. She was also great coming down the stretch on the LPGA with two straight top 5 finishes, including a solo 3rd at the CME Titleholders. She has an unofficial LPGA win at the 2012 HSBC Brazil Cup. What is left for Waen is to secure an official LPGA title to complete her global resume. She will. She’s a winner.
