Petra Kvitova Advances To 2012 New Haven Open Final; Caroline Wozniacki Win Streak Ends With Injury Retirement

I thought there were a lot of reasons Caroline Wozniacki’s unbeaten streak would end at the New Haven Open at Yale this year. Petra Kvitova was one of those reasons. Another was Caroline not playing at the level she had been in past events. Although she didn’t advance, Agnieszka Radwanska was also a reason. But what I did not want to see, what I never want to see, is a player have to lose due to injury retirement. Unfortunately, that is what happened to Caro in her match against Maria Kirilenko. She was not feeling 100% from the start and after losing the first set decided to stop. It’s a good move on Wozniacki’s part. With all due respect to the New Haven Open, the big tournament is the upcoming US Open. Caro shouldn’t risk a more serious problem by playing New Haven injured. Kirilenko will move on to face Petra Kvitova in the final. Kvitova has already wrapped up the US Open Series points win, but would really build up momentum by winning her second US Open series event of the summer on the eve of the Big One in Flushing Meadows.
