Petra Kvitova Defeats Andrea Petkovic To Win 2011 Brisbane International Women’s Title

Petra Kvitova, 2011 Brisbane International Winner

There was a reason Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic was the 2010 WTA Newcomer of the Year and she showed it in routing Germany’s Andrea Petkovic in the women’s singles final of the 2011 Brisbane International 6-1 6-3. Although, I wonder how a player is voted “Newcomer” of the Year in 2010 when she alread won a title and reached another final in 2009. I suppose that is what a semifinal appearance at Wimbledon in 2010 will do. When she won the Hobart event in 2009, it barely registered compared to her semifinal Wimbledon appearance. Well, if she was able to sneak up on people at Wimbledon last year, make no mistake, she will not sneak up on anybody at the 2011 Australian Open. Anybody who gets Kvitova as an opponent in Melbourne will know just what they’re in for.

It was really no problem for Petra in the final as she broke Andrea to start the match. From there on, she used her lefty serve and power to keep Petkovic from ever getting into the match. Kvitova has now won in Hobart and Brisbane. She seems to like the vegemite in Australia. Might she be serving up a Major title in Melbourne?
