Na Ri Lee Wins 2013 Miyagi TV Cup Dunlop Ladies Golf Tournament As Ai Miyazato Stumbles Down The Stretch

Na Ri Lee, 2013 Miyagi TV Dunlop Cup Ladies Golf Tournament Winner

Today I celebrate the first JLPGA win in Na Ri Lee’s career. But as much as I want to offer plaudits to the overnight co-leader at the 2013 Miyagi TV Cup Dunlop Ladies Golf Tournament for holding on to a well earned victory, the tale of this tournament cannot be told without focusing a spotlight on Ai Miyazato. The 15-time JLPGA champion, who also has 9 LPGA career victories, looked to be writing another brilliant chapter to her illustrious golf history before an uncharacteristic implosion sunk her chances. After completing the first two rounds at even par (69-75), Ai-sama came out in the third round absolutely on fire, torching the course at Rifu Golf Club with 7 birdies in her first 14 holes. The threads of a triumphant come from behind title run were being woven into an ongoing legendary golf tapestry. Until…things fell apart.

Ai Miyazato

In her first JLPGA event of the season, Miyazato’s homecoming was spoiled by a double bogey on 15. In the blink of an eye, the work Ai did to build a lead in the final round was wiped out as she let the field back into contention. Miyazato would stumble again with a bogey on 17, while Na Ri Lee shot a 2-under. Lee’s score would prove enough on this day to grab the title with Na Ri finishing at 5-under overall to Teresa Lu, the other overnight co-leader, and Miyazato’s 4-under overall. In the end, all credit must be showered upon Na Ri Lee. She played all 54 holes in winning fashion. That said, oh what could have been for Ai Miyazato. This is one that clearly got away.
