Australian Open 2018: Madison Keys Making A Move Down Under

Madison Keys (click to enlarge)

Madison Keys might have been flying under the radar at the 2018 Australian Open, but after a dominant 6-3 6-2 victory over the 8th seed Caroline Garcia the entire women’s draw has been put on alert. The young American is coming. When Madison plays like this, she is capable of defeating anybody. As with many players, consistency is the question. I’ve made it known often that Keys is my favorite current player. But I have to call it like I see it. If Maddie plays like she played against Garcia then she can win the Australian Open this year. The issue is duplicating that performance from match to match. Not only that, depending on who she plays next things could get even trickier. Angelique Kerber is playing great tennis, maybe the best on tour so far this season. And Hsieh Su-Wei is a giant killer with a game style that gives the big guns fits. But for now it’s on to the quarterfinals for Maddie. Nothing would make me happier than to be posting this time next week about her first Major championship title.
