Grace Park: “Na Yeon Choi Has All The Skills It Takes To Become #1”; Catriona Matthew: “Yani’s A Bit Like (Annika)”

Grace Park

Over the last two weeks of the Asian swing, world #1 Yani Tseng and #4 Na Yeon Choi have been battling it out, each winning a close victory. Two great champions in their own right, 6-time LPGA winner and 2004 Vare Trophy winner Grace Park and 3-time LPGA winner and 2009 Ricoh Women’s British Open winner Catriona Matthew, spoke about NYC and Yani. After a 30 second intro in Mandarin, Catriona and Grace come on in English.

  2. Thanks for the post (about my two favorite players on tour), Bobby!

I agree with Grace to an extent. Na Yeon Choi definitely has the potential to become #1. She makes the game look easy, does everything well and is incredibly consistent. You might be able to point to her mental game right now as being her only weakness. But I think the longer she plays with & against Yani, the more confident & better she’ll be. Truly a scary thought if you’re a Yani fan (like me…but I’m also a fan of hers)!

Yani, on the hand, is much more explosive. She can potentially go lower than all but a handful of players on the planet (Suzann, Lexi, Lincicome & Wei come to mind). Unlike Choi, Yani can be infuriating to watch at times. Wait, why? Because she usually gives herself SO MANY chances to birdie a hole. While Na Yeon’s game has no weaknesses, Yani’s Achilles’ heel would be her putting. It’s just inconsistent. Frustratingly so if you’re a big Yani fan. Right now, the rest of Yani’s game is so exceptional that it generally for covers her putting but she should definitely be wary of Choi.

Hopefully, one day we’ll see both of these fine players in the Hall of Fame. They (along with Jiyai and maybe Ai) have a realistic chance of reaching the most difficult HOF in sports.
