2014 Australian Open Women’s Singles Day 10: Agnieszka Radwanska Upsets 2-Time Defending Champion Victoria Azarenka, Will Face Dominika Cibulkova In Semis

At last year’s Wimbledon, upsets and exits of top seeds like Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova opened up the tournament for Agnieszka Radwanska, who led in her semifinal against Sabine Lisicki before failing to close the show and reach the final. And so her quest for her first Major continues. At the 2014 Australian Open, Aga will get a second chance. With Serena and Masha once again suffering early departures, Radwanska played some brilliant tennis to oust the remaining top 3 seed, the 2-time defending champion and #2 seed Victoria Azarenka, 6-1 5-7 6-0. Aga has always been an amazing shot maker with an almost precognitive ability to see where her opponent is going to play strokes before they happen.

But the path to the final won’t be easy for Aga. Dominika Cibulkova demolished Simona Halep 3 and love. It was a convincing follow-up to her upset of Masha the previous round. Dominika is a giant killer, so she will not be intimidated by Aga or anybody else.

“I’m really glad with the way I played, especially with the way I handled it mentally, after a big win over Maria. I wasn’t the favorite in this match against Halep either, but I walked on the court with the confidence I could do it again today.” – Dominika Cibulkova

Aga and Li Na are the favorites in their respective semis against Dominika and Eugenie Bouchard. However, they both face very “live” underdogs. I would not at all be surprised to see one, or even both, matches result in upsets. That said, Li Na and Aga are both fan favorites and the stronger overall players. I’m sure many are pulling for a final featuring the highest profile players remaining in the draw. Admittedly, so am I.
